Everyone's Scared AI Will Take Their Job. It's Coming for Your Shipping Bill First.

Diesel just hit an all-time record of $6.53 a gallon. The AI boom is one reason, but not the biggest one. Here's what's really going on, what it means for freight rates, and how to keep your shipping costs down.

Scroll any feed right now and you'll see the same fear: AI is coming for our jobs. Accountants, writers, customer service, coders. Everyone's wondering if a chatbot is about to replace them.

Here's the plot twist nobody's talking about. AI can't back a 53-foot trailer into a tight loading dock. It can't strap a 400-pound copier upright so it arrives without a scratch. But the AI boom is doing something you'll feel much sooner than a robot taking your job: it's one more thing pushing up the price of diesel. And diesel is what almost every freight truck in America runs on.

So let's skip the doom-scrolling and talk about what actually hits your wallet this fall.

Diesel Just Broke Its All-Time Record

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the national average for on-highway diesel reached $6.529 a gallon on September 21, 2026. That's up 24 cents from the week before and $2.78 higher than a year ago. The old record was about $5.85, so this one beat it by roughly 66 cents.

Where you ship from and to matters, too:

So Why Is Diesel So Expensive? (And Where AI Fits In)

1. The big one: the Strait of Hormuz

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the conflict with Iran has choked off one of the world's most important oil routes. Global oil flows are down about 13 million barrels a day compared with August 2025. Less oil moving means higher prices for everything refined from it, and diesel gets hit hardest.

2. Refineries are maxed out

U.S. refineries are running at nearly 97% capacity trying to make up the difference. When refineries have no spare room, any hiccup pushes prices up fast.

3. The AI angle: data centers run on backup diesel

Here's where the AI story comes in. Every AI data center needs backup power in case the grid goes down, and most of that backup runs on diesel generators. Global data center backup capacity grew from about 20 gigawatts in 2018 to roughly 55 gigawatts in 2024. A single 2-megawatt generator can burn 130–140 gallons of diesel an hour at full load, and big campuses run dozens of them. Data center electricity demand is expected to more than double by 2030.

Let's keep it real: AI isn't the main reason diesel is at a record. The Hormuz closure and refinery limits are. But AI data centers are a brand-new, fast-growing source of diesel demand, and new demand in a tight market never helps prices.

What This Means for Shipping Rates Right Now

Freight prices are made of two pieces: the linehaul rate (paying for the truck, driver, and miles) and the fuel surcharge. Most carriers tie their fuel surcharge to that same weekly U.S. diesel average. When diesel jumps, your shipping quote jumps with it, often within days.

And linehaul rates are already higher, too. In mid-September 2026, FTR reported truckload spot rates up 43% year over year for dry vans, 48% for refrigerated, and 29% for flatbed. DAT's national averages before fuel were about $2.20 a mile for dry van, $2.71 for reefer, and $2.62 for flatbed.

What that looks like in real dollars

A loaded tractor-trailer gets roughly 6 to 7 miles per gallon. On a 1,000-mile trip at 6.5 mpg, the truck burns about 154 gallons of diesel:

That's about $430 more in fuel for the same trip. If your shipment shares a truck with other freight, you only pay part of that. But it shows why every quote you get this fall looks higher than the one you got last year.

It doesn't stop at freight, either. Researchers have found that when fuel costs rise 10–15%, grocery prices tend to follow with a 2–4% bump. Diesel really is baked into everything.

6 Ways to Keep Your Shipping Costs Down When Diesel Is High

  1. Be flexible on dates. A few days of wiggle room lets your shipment ride with other freight headed the same way, and that's often cheaper than a dedicated truck.
  2. Ship everything at once. Moving three copiers? Book them together. One pickup beats three separate trips, every time.
  3. Give exact weights and dimensions. Guesses lead to re-rated invoices. Accurate specs get you an accurate price the first time. Our copier shipping cost guide explains what we need.
  4. Tell us about access up front. Loading dock, liftgate, stairs, elevator? Knowing early avoids surprise charges on delivery day.
  5. Prep before pickup. A machine that's ready to go means less time on site. Use our pre-pickup checklist.
  6. Ask for an all-in quote. Always confirm whether a price includes fuel. With diesel moving 24 cents in a week, a quote without fuel isn't really a quote.

The Part of Shipping AI Can't Do

AI can write an email and make a spreadsheet. It can't disconnect a production printer, lock the scanner, wrap it, and keep it upright for 800 miles. That still takes trained people who handle expensive equipment every day.

That's what we do at USA Copier Movers: office copier moves, lease returns, and nationwide copier shipping for every major brand, with one real person on the phone who knows where your machine is. Fuel prices are out of anyone's control. How carefully your equipment gets handled isn't.

Quick Answers

Why are diesel prices so high in 2026?

Mainly because the Strait of Hormuz closure cut global oil flows and U.S. refineries are running near full capacity. Growing diesel demand from AI data center backup generators adds to the pressure.

Will my shipping cost go up because of diesel?

Most likely, yes. Fuel surcharges follow the weekly U.S. diesel average, so higher diesel means a higher fuel portion on your quote.

Should I ship now or wait?

Nobody can promise where fuel goes next, and analysts expect spot rates to stay soft for a few weeks. If your move date is fixed, locking in a firm, all-in quote now takes the guesswork out. Call (866) 216-7742 and we'll give you a straight answer.
